What's the difference between WiFi6 and WiFi5?

Apr 06, 2022Leave a message

WiFi6 is the sixth generation wireless network technology. It is a wireless LAN technology created by the WiFi Alliance based on IEEE 802.11 standard.

WiFi1 to WiFi6:

WiFi1:802.11b

WiFi2:802.11a

WiFi3:802.11g

WiFi4:802.11n

WiFi5:802.11ac

WiFi6:802.11ax

The difference between WIFI6 and WIFI5

Frequency:

WiFi5 only covers 5GHz, while WiFi6 covers 2.4/5GHz, so WiFi6 covers the low-speed and high-speed devices completely.

Modulation mode:

WiFi5 supports 256-QAM,but WiFi6 supports 1024-QAM. Which means the WiFi6 with faster transmission speed . The traditional wifi5 transmission data can reach about 500mbps, while wifi6 can reach about 800mbps, improving nearly 50%.

Capacity:

WiFi6's MU-MIMO technology allows multi-terminal devices sharing channel and access the internet at the same time,

In this way, network resource utilization is improved, network congestion is reduced, and network performance is greatly improved

MU-MIMO

Security:

WiFi 6 (wireless router) devices must adopt WPA 3 security protocol to be authenticated by WiFi Alliance, which is more secure.

Improved battery life

Power saving difference: WiFi 6 introduces Target Wake Time (TWT)  technology,  which allows devices to negotiate when and how often they wake up to send or receive data. This feature increases device sleep time and substantially improves battery life for mobile and IoT devices.
